One in 5 australians will experience a mental illness during their lives.
If not you, it will be a friend or a loved one. It is a massive issue that has consequences for millions of Australians. For a good deal of last century our understanding of mental illness remained static. But over the last 20 years or so, workers in fields such as psychology, neuroscience, psychiatry and community support have made exciting discoveries about the power we have to change the way we think and what it means for people who are recovering from a mental illness.
We know that recovery can be achieved and that part of the solution depends on changing the way we think. It means that people who are on the recovery path have access to new and better methods to achieve their goals. It also means that change and recovery will happen best when the rest of the community changes the way it thinks as well.
The ru ok 2 day? project exists to get the good news out... In october last year thousands of people gathered in Dandenong Park to learn about mental health and celebrate the things we can all do to live better. Plans for similar celebrations in 2009 are underway. Please check back regularly.
The ruok2day initiative is proudly supported by: ERMHA, The City of Greater Dandenong, The Victorian Department of Human Services, Southern Health, South East Healthy Communities Partnership, Bay City Holden, Harris Freer Toyota, Office National, Cornerstone, Avocare and The GPT Group.
